taxonomic status
sanctioned in Exidia
taxonomic status
Dai & Wu (2021) described A. novozealandica distinct from A. cornea. A. cornea was described from Hawaii and lacks a designated type. A sequence of Hawaian material is basal to the cornea-novozealandica clade. The deposited sequences of A. novozealandica, including the type, contain initial/final base-call errors that have not been trimmed. The A. cornea clade contains some haplotype-level variation but probably insufficient to justify the recognition of different species. A. novozealandica is a probable biogeographc race of A. cornea. Stated differences in spore/basidia size are not supported by re-examination of material. More, multi-gene studies are required of Pacific collections and the designation of an appropriate epitype for Ausricularia cornea [JAC 2021]
