Political Region
This species is an Australian endemic, appearing yearly in New Zealand as a trans-Tasman immigrant or vagrant, and establishing temporary colonies in summer (Fox 1973; Dugdale 1988). Sometimes it may be found in the same locality in successive seasons, suggesting longer-term establishment (B.H. Patrick, pers. comm.). It usually occurs in small numbers, although Fox (1973) observed that it could be abundant in some years.
