Sochting & Arup (2024) only cite New Zealand specimens for this taxon, and Galloway (2007) regarded the homotypic synonym, Caloplaca subpyracea, as endemic. However, it may be in mainland Australia and Tasmania. Sochting & Arup state: "According to Galloway (2007), it is widely distributed in New Zealand up to Wellington in the North Island, but his records may also include T. gallowayi and T. flammea. Occurrence in Tasmania and mainland Australia has not been confirmed by us."
