Descriptions
Rhizomatous herb with congested internodes forming compact, isolated rosettes 2-3.5 cm across with 2-6 tiers of viable leaves, anchored by tufts of thick, tabular roots, 1.5-2.5 mm wide produced along the horizontal, underground portion of the stem. Leaves isophyllous, thickly subcoriaceous, light green, only briefly persistent with age; blades reflexed away from axis, broadly spathulate to suborbicular, 0.5-1.3 (0.7)* cm long, 0.2-0.5 (0.5) cm wide, obtuse, attenuate at base, with 3-5 (4) pairs of very shallow notches, upper surface densely clad and concealed for most part by very long, tapering, shaggy, sericeous, eglandular, multicellular hairs to 3 mm long, intermixed with shorter glandular pubescence, lower surface glabrous, often tinged red, 5-8 (6) major veins evident; petioles reddish, short but broad, 0.2-0.3 (0.2) cm long, 0.1-0.3 (0.2) cm wide. Inflorescence stout, somewhat flexuous; peduncle 3.7-4.5 (4.1) cm long in flower, 5.0-7.5 (5.8) cm long in fruit, clothed in erect, multicellular gland-tipped pubescence to c. 1 mm long; peduncle bearing a pair of cauline leaves, and 2-4 obovate-spathulate distinctly concave, minutely 5-8 (6) -crenulate to subentire bracts in pairs, 0.5-1.3 (0.7) cm long, 0.5-0.7 (0.5) cm wide, obtuse to retuse, inserted at 45° to the peduncle, abaxially clad in long, gland-tipped hairs mixed with some eglandular pubescence towards the margin, adaxially very sparsely pubescent on the upper half and with 3 longitudinal veins evident. Flowers 1-3 with one of the uppermost and/or both of the lowermost pairs of bracts sterile; pedicels 0.5-1.5 (1.0) cm long in flower, 1.0-2.0 (1.5) cm in fruit, glandular pubescent, hardly exceeding the subtending bracts; calyx distinctly bilabiate, obtriangular, streaked with purple-blue lines externally, 0.5-0.8 (0.6) cm long, 0.4-0.7 (0.6) cm wide, base acute, evenly clothed with a mixture of long glandular and eglandular pubescence externally, some hairs also on the inside, lobes elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 0.1-0.4 (0.2) cm wide, acute, the 2 anterior lobes cleft to base, the 3 posterior united for ½-2/3 length. Corolla entirely glabrous, to 2 cm wide, white except for the throat flushed yellowish-green below; tube narrow, curved, much shorter than the calyx; corolla lobes ovate to obovate-oblong, briefly emarginate, not angular, the two posterior lobes 0.9—1.1 (1.0) cm long, 0.7-0.8 (0.7) cm wide, somewhat spreading, the three anterior 0.8-1.2 (1.0) cm long, 0.6-0.8 (0.7) cm wide, erect to only mildly spreading; longitudinal axis of the corolla much longer than the transverse axis; style 0.5-0.6 (0.5) cm long, angled at the base, briefly exserted from throat, stigma white; filaments to 8 mm long, anthers purple, 1.0-1.5 cm long. Semi-erect, intermittently tufted rhizomatous herb with somewhat congested erect shoot tips and deeply buried rhizomes with short, glabrous internodes 1-2 mm long. Leaves distinctly petiolate, erect, thin, but coriaceous, dark green above, purple and venose below, glabrous except for sparse, strigose deciduous adpressed pubescence on the upper surface of the young leaves and a few multicellular eglandular hairs on the blade near its base and petiole margin; blade suborbicular to broadly ovate (1.0-) 2.2- 3 cm long, (0.8-) 1.8-2.2 cm wide, apex obtuse, base round to subcordate with 4-7 pairs of obtuse, somewhat angular, deep crenations each with a conspicuous reddish-purple hydathode; petiole 0.5-2.0 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm wide, strongly flattened and flared along the margin at the point of insertion. Inflorescence stout, 11-16 cm long, bearing a pair of cauline leaves; peduncle beset with scattered tapering, delicate, eglandular hairs, internodes 2-4, with 3 but occasionally up to 4 erect to spreading, ovate to ovate-oblong bracts decreasing in size apically, these glabrous above and below except for a few marginal hairs near the base. Flowers 3-9, the lowest pair of bracts invariably sterile; pedicels slender, lax, (1.5-) 2-2.5 cm long in flower, 2.5-3.0 cm long in fruit with scattered eglandular pubescence; calyx oblong to narrowly ovate-oblong, the base obtuse, the lobes all cleft entirely to the base, 5-6 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, obtuse, somewhat spreading in the mature flowers. Corolla white, the throat yellow, with scattered eglandular hairs on the outside of the tube and on the upper surface of the anterior lobes and 3 rows of dense white hairs radiating along the throat and extending somewhat onto the anterior corolla lobes; lobes of the corolla broadly ovate, non-angular, emarginate, spreading widely, 0.9-1.1 cm long and wide; longitudinal and transverse corolla axes hardly differing. Capsule glabrous, not seen at maturity.

Much, but loosely branched semi-prostrate rhizomatous herb forming extensive overground lax patches anchored by thick roots, 1-1.5 mm diam. evenly distributed along the underground portion of the stems; branches diverging at 45-60° from the axes, the stems tinged red, 2.0-2.5 mm wide, clothed in non-shaggy, long eglandular and glandtipped multicellular hairs, the stems distinctly upturned at the apices; internodes 0.3-1.3 (1.8) cm long, easily distinguished, especially on the more mature stems. Leaves mostly widely separated on the stems, subdistichous, suberect, somewhat delicate, light green, on long, slender, reddish, 3- nerved, pubescent petioles 0.8-2.0 (1.3) cm long, 2.5-7.5 (3.2) mm wide, persistent on the old stems; blades obovate-spathulate, 4-6 major veins salient on both surfaces, 1.5-5.0 (2.8) cm long, 0.8-2.2 (1.3) cm wide, apex obtuse, base attenuate, margin 10—17 (14)-crenulate, the divisions obtuse, asymmetrical, each with a small secondary hydathodal notch above the upper lh of the primary notch, upper leaf surface sparsely but evenly clothed in erect multicellular, eglandular pubescence sometimes interspersed with glandular hairs of equal length, pubescence on the lower leaf surface mostly glandular, limited to the raised veins, deciduous with age. Inflorescence slender, 3.7-11.2 (8.5) cm long in flower, 6.7-14.6 (11.3) cm long in fruit, moderately clad in gland-tipped pubescence, not shaggy, mostly < 1 mm long; bracts foliaceous, 2-3 borne at each of the 2-4 internodes, obovate-spathulate, < ½ the length of the inflorescence internodes, 0.5-1.5 (1.1) cm long, 0.5-1.2 (0.8) cm wide, reflexed, 3-5-nerved, distinctly 6-10-crenulate, adaxially clad in glandular and eglandular pubescence towards the tips, abaxially with glandular pubescence only along the veins. Flowers 1-2 per node, occasionally the lowermost node with only 1 flower; pedicels greatly exceeding the bracts in length, 1.3-2.5 (2.1) cm long in flower, 1.8-3.2 (2.3) cm long in fruit, glandular pubescent; calyx bilabiate, obtriangular somewhat inflated, light green, 0.5-1.2 (0.8) cm long, 0.8-1.0 (0.8) cm wide, base subacute, sparsely, but evenly clad in a mixture of non-shaggy glandular and eglandular pubescence externally, scattered pubescence on the inside; lobes of the calyx oblong, distinctly 3-nerved, 0.2-0.3 (0.3) cm wide, obtuse to retuse, the 2 anterior lobes cleft to the base, the 3 posterior lobes united for 2/3 to almost the entire length. Creeping, prostrate, rhizomatous herb with clearly evident glabrous, reddish petioles and internodes, forming tufts up to 8 cm across; leaves widely separated on the stems, pale green, softly textured, on long, flattened petioles, 2.5-4 (3.0) cm long, 0.5-1.5 (1.0) cm wide, expanding gradually into obtuse spathulate blades 1.2-2.3 (1.5) cm long and wide, the margins with 5-9 symmetric shallow crenulations with poorly evident hydathodes; upper leaf surface clothed in soft, adpressed, mixed glandular and eglandular multicellular hairs, lower surface with mostly gland-tipped pubescence evenly distributed along the veins and intervein areas, the 5-6 major veins not obscured by the pubescence. Inflorescence very slender and flexuous, 8.0-11.0 (10.0) cm long in flower, evenly clad in long, multicellular glandular pubescence to 1 mm long; bracts (2-) 3-4 (-5) pairs, obovate-spathulate, somewhat concave, 0.7-1.3 (1.0) cm long and wide, obtuse, entire to very broadly 3-7-crenulate, with long, weak, glandular pubescence only on the lower surface. Flowers 0-2 per node, the lower most pair of bracts frequently sterile; pedicels brownish-black, 1.3-1.5 (1.4) cm long in flower, elongating considerably to 2-2.5 (2.4) cm in fruit, glandular-pubescent, calyx strongly bilabiate, obtriangular to oblong, streaked with purple-blue lines abaxially, pubescence on the outside only, 0.6-0.9 (0.7) cm long, 0.6-0.9 (0.8) cm wide, the lobes oblong, 1.5-2.5 (2.1) mm wide, obtuse, the 2 anterior lobes united for ½ to 2/3 the entire length, the 3 posterior lobes united for greater than 2/3 the entire length, these however completely divided from the anterior lobes; corolla to 1.5 cm wide, entirely glabrous, white except for the yellow throat, tube 2/3 the length of the calyx; corolla lobes obovate-oblong, 0.8-1.1 (1.1) cm long, 0.7-0.8 (0.7) cm wide, obtuse to emarginate, not angular, somewhat spreading, longitudinal axis of the corolla hardly exceeding the transverse axis; capsule glabrous, calyx persistent at maturity, seeds minute, brown.
