The name Rhododendron pleistanthum was apparently first published in Wilding's 1923 Rhododendrons, their names and addresses as cited by Flora of China online. However, as no protologue has been seen, it cannot be confirmed that it was validly published, and if so, which of the various cited authorities is correct. The authority is variously cited as E.H. Wilding, E.H.Wilson and Balf.f. ex Wilding. If the 1923 publication of Rhododendron pleistanthum was not valid, then the probable correct name is R. pleistanthum Balf.f. ex Hutch., in Stevenson, J.B.
