Dixon (1927, p. 298) wrote of Racopilum laetum: "this may be a distinct species, but I am doubtful if it is really dinstinct form [R. cristatum]. Sainsbury (1955) placed R. laetum in synonymy with R. strumiferum. Specimens named by T.W.N. Beckett as R. laetum were determined by both K.W. Allison and A.J. Fife as R. strumiferum. van Zanten (2006, J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 100: 548) followed Sainsbury's synonymy. It was not listed in A.J. Fife's unpublished Moss Checklist of the late 2010s. It is placed tentatively in synonomy with R. strumiferum following Sainsbury for this names database.
