Genus name entered on database as the first determined name for a NZ specimen collected by D. J. Galloway in 1967. D.J. Galloway (1985) wrote that "in the past several New Zealand collections specimens of Gymnoderma melacarpum were misidentified as Spharophoropsis stereocauloides, a South American plant not occuring in New Zealand". Gymnoderma melacarpum is now known as Neophyllis melacarpa (Galloway 2007)
