Although the New Zealand population of Sphaerocarpos texanus recorded was regarded as more likley to have derived from spores blown from Australia, where it is an exotic species, than on camping gear, the authors stated "it is appropriate to treat Sphaerocarpos texanus as an exotic species in New Zealand, in line with the treatment of other species that have self-introduced to New Zealand from non-indigenous occurrences overseas."
