Tortula knightii Mitt.
species
Tortula knightii
The holotype was collected by Mossman in Tasmania, but there is a specimen labelled “New Zealand Knight” of Tortella knightii in NY-Mitten (00371726!), on the same sheet as the holotype. This may account for Mitten’s naming the moss in honour of Charles Knight (c.1808–1891), New Zealand’s first auditor general, and early collector and promoter of N.Z. plants (Galloway 1990).
