Fraser-Jenkins et al. (1982) stated "... the remarkable [Athyrium niponicum] var. pictum (Maxwell) Fraser-Jenkins comb. nov. (basionym: Athyriun goeringianum var. pictum Maxwell, Gard. Chron. Agric. Gaz. 1867 (2): 25 (Jan. 1867); a clear description given in the editorial, by Maxwell, who was the editor from 1865–1867, is sufficient to validate this name at the varietal rank, which the use of a trinomial in that periodical indicated.
