Fife (1996) cited Sphagnum perichatiale Hampe from Linnaea 20: 66 (1847). This may be dubiously published"...und Sphagnum perichaetiale m. aus. Brasilien, von Beyrich bei Rio Janeiro gesammelt" Tropicos (April 2020) cites Hampe in Müller, Syn. Musc. Fron. 1: 93 (1848), where there is a description of the species.
