Subtropicals, Vol. 1, No. 2, p. 18,19; Neoregelia cruenta and N. johannis have both been heavily hybridised over the years to the extent that the spsecies are rare in private collections. Many of the hybrids have not been names and it is usually impossible to identify the parents, hence the lare numbers of plants called simply N. cruenta hybrid or N. johannis hybrid.
