Allan Fife (pers. comm. 4/10/2016): Hypopterygium discolor Mitt. in Hook.f., Handb. N. Zeal. fl. 2: 488, pr. p. (1867) is known from New Zealand mainly by a 19th century S. Mossman collection from “Kaipara Harbour, Wairoa forests” in NY. It is probable that the Mossman collection is mislabelled (Mossman collected extensively in Queensland). Unfortunately, the Mossman collection is the lectotype of the name! The few other N collections are old, without locality, and collected by Knight and Reader. I consider the evidence that this species occurs in NZ to be weak. It has not been found in modern times. Kruijer (2002) accepts the species and cites it from numerous eastern Australia localities. But he also doubts the Mossman locality data for the type.
