The first reference to Clianthus magnificus was when it had been offered for sale by the Van Houtte nursery as a nomen nudum (Louis Van Houtte’s Pflanzen=Katalog Nr. 52, Supplement and Extrakt, gültig für 1854, as cited in Allgemeine Gartenzeitung 22, 120. 1854). While authorship of Clianthus puniceus var. magnificus is attributed to Van Houtte by Plants of the World Online, http://pow o.science.kew.org/ (accessed 2 August 2021), the validating description of the basionym is clearly ascribed to J.E.P. (Jules Émile Planchon). Therefore, the Clianthus name should be cited as either C. puniceus var. magnificus Van Houtte ex Planch. or C. puniceus var. magnificus Planch. (ICN Art. 46.5, Ex. 32; Turland & al. in Regnum Veg. 159. 2018). The meaning of the ‘V.H.’ interpreted by Plants of the World Online as an indirect reference to the basionym can be disputed, as it is equally as likely to be referring to the Van Houtte nursery catalogue of 1854 where the plant was being sold as Clianthus magnificus, a name not validly published. The context of Charles Dickens article (Household Words 13: 581. 1856) should be considered as he is referring to garden plants of horticultural merit and in the specific case of Clianthus magnificus to a plant that is a new introduction from the Van Houtte nursery. Thus, Dickens use of the name Clianthus magnificus should be considered to have been taken from the nomen nudum in the Van Houtte nursery catalogue.
