2 varieties of Apium prostratum has been recorded for New Zealand. Apium prostratum subsp. prostratum var. filiforme (A.Rich.) Kirk (1899) is regarded as an indigenous plant, while Apium prostratum Vent. subsp. prostratum var. prostratum is an introducred taxon (Heenan et al. 2002). In New Zealand this variety has been collected only from the vicinity of Rangaunu Harbour, Northland, in the early 1900s. In Australia it occurs in mainly coastal habitats throughout southern and eastern Australia (Western Australia to Queensland) (Short 1979). As Rangaunu Harbour was an important sea port we consider this variety to have been accidentally introduced to New Zealand through shipping contact, and it was probably a contaminant of ballast. There have been no subsequent collections and it is not currently known to occur at Rangaunu Harbour.
