Tropicos regards this as invalid, and cites the same publication for Cerdidiphyllum japonicum as the genus, but the name "japnonicum" was not stated in the protologue for the genus. From IPNI: Cercidiphyllum Siebold & Zucc. (1846) was validly published with a genus description, but did not include any species name. Hoffmann & Schultes bis (l.c.) listed “Cercidiphyllum japonicum (S. et Z.)” (sic) as an accepted name but without a diagnosis or description. Since neither Siebold & Zuccarini nor Hoffmann & Schultes bis gave any indication that there was more than one species in Cercidiphyllum and since Hoffmann & Schultes bis indirectly referred to the description of Cercidiphyllum, the species name C. japonicum was validly published (see ICN Art. 38.12, Ex. 20).
