Algaebase.org (accessed 20 July 2023) gives the current name for Gigartina polyglotta as Gigartina decipiens var. polyglotta (J.Agardh.) V.J.Chapm. and recognises that name as current. However, the current name for Gigartina decipiens (Hook.f. & Harv.) Hook.f. & Harv. is given in Algaebase.org as Sarcothalia decipiens (Hook.f. & Harv.) Hommers. Nelson et al. (2019), Conservation status of New Zealand macroalgae, accepted “Sarcothalia” decipiens (Hook.f & Harv.) Hommers. for New Zealand as taxonomically uncertain, but may not include Chapman's combination with variety polyglotta.
