The name S. pontederae was published by Villars in 1789 and Willdenow (1806) cited Villar’s name Salix pontederae in synonymy of his own Salix pontederana. The type of Salix pontederae Vill. is a specimen of S. hastata L. and so the name cannot be used for the hybrid S. cinerea x S. purpurea. This hybrid needs a new name.
