All accessioned specimens exhibit a pubescent (hairy) underside, with hairs covering the entire surface, not just the veins. A closer comparison with available keys and descriptions suggests that our material from New Zealand closely resembles what is known as Solidago altissima. Our Adventive Flora also provides some insight on this. It notes, “Most wild material features secund inflorescences, entire leaves on most of the stem, and relatively large capitula, characteristics that may be referred to S. canadensis var. scabra Torrey & A. Gray (often treated as a distinct species, S. altissima L.).”
