Issue of publication of basionym (June 2019): The original publication of this name has not been ascertained. Index Fungorum gives Parmelia mougeotii Schaer. ex D. Dietr., Deutschl. Kryptog. Gewächse, 4 Abth.: 118 (1846) Mycobank gives the (unlikely) citation as Parmelia mougeotii Schaer., Lich. Flora Great Brit.: 118 (1846). Having tracked neither of these publications down, the earliest reference found today was by Schaerer himself in his Enumeratio (1850, p. 46) to his exsiccati specimen 548. This was not referred to in his Lichenum Helveticum Spicilegium. Hale (1974) when making the combination in Xanthoparmelia, cites the basionym as Parmelia mougeotii Schaer. Enum. 46 (1850).
