Named in honour of Heinrich Wawra Ritter von Fernsee (1831–1887), a Czech-Austrian physician and botanist who collected in New Zealand during a voyage around the world (1872–1873) with Prince Phillip and Prince August von Sachsen-Coburg-Kohary.
