B. tasmanica is regarded as a synonym of Buxbaumia aphylla in recent Australian literature. Allan Fife (2014) noted "I agree with Dixon (1929, p. 369) that B. tasmanica is not conspecific with B. novae-zelandiae", but made no written comparison with B. aphylla.
