Pterocladiophila is a monotypic genus and it was originally thought to be restricted to New Zealand, growing as a parasite on Pterocladia lucida (Turner) J. Agardh (Gelidiales). It has been reported to also occur in the Caribbean (Guiry & Guiry 2013).
