The homotypic synonym, Sphaerophorus melanocarpus, was accepted for New Zealand by Galloway (1985). Wedin treated species formerly in Sphaerophorus, mostly in Bunodophorn, placing subspecific varieties of Sphaerophorus melanocarpus in a number of different taxa. Sphaerophorus melanocarpus s.s. (= Bunodophoron melanocarpum) does not appear to be in New Zealand. It was not treated as such by Galloway (2007).
