The previously accepted name for the Leptolejeunea in New Zealand was L. elliptica subsp. subacuta. However, Shu et al divided L. elliptica into four taxa, with L. elliptica s.s. in the Neotropics, L. subacuta and another species in Asia, and L. australis Steph. in Australasia.
