Persson originally described this taxon as Hodgsonia Perss. in a brief, personally published, pamphlet in 1953, but that name was illegitimate. He then, in 1954, published and even briefer "correction" in which he validly renamed the taxon as NeohodgsoniaPerss. Later that year he published more on Neohodgsonia in Persson, H. 1954: On Neohodgsonia H. Perss. the new hepatic genus from new Zealand and Tristan da Cunha. Botaniska Notiser 1: 39–44.
