The epithet sainsburyanus is derived from the genus of the basionym, Sainsburia novae-zealandiae. In the protologue H.N. Dixon states “I have named it after the collector [G.O.K. Sainsbury (1880–1957)], who has not only done much to add to our knowledge of the highly interesting moss flora of N.Z., but has stimulated interest in its study among many new workers.”
