The epithet ‘kohu’ derives from Te Reo Māori for ‘mist’ (K. A. Raharaha, Ngati Kuri, pers. comm., 22 March 2017). The name alludes to the sea fog that often shrouds the location in which this species was found, Rangatira (South East Island), the southern-most of the main islands of the Chatham Islands group.
