Hyphodontia lanata Burds. & Nakasone was introduced as a non-homotypic replacement for Cunningham's illegitimate Odontia vesiculosa. Their species, based on a USA type, is not conspecific with the NZ taxon for which the correct replacement name is Xylodon vesiculosus Yurchenko, Nakasone & Riebesehl in Riebesehl et al
