The author of this name is consistently cited as "F. Hauch" by Nordstedt in his 1887 paper, however the name of the Austrian algologist was Ferdinand Hauck.
Etymology
The epithet waikatensis, originally published as Waikatensis, appears to be based on the place name Waikato. Chapman et al (1957) cited this forma from Waikato River amongst other places.
