"Widespread in Africa, Indomalesia and Oceania." "Known in the New Zealand Botanical Region from the Kermadec and Chatham Islands, the latter of which may be the world southern limit for the species. The distribution in both Australia and New Zealand is poorly documented, and it is possible the species occurs on the north-east coast of the North Island, and associated islands."

editorial
The recently proposed synonymy of L. anisophylla with L. adpressa Nees, which has priority (Gradstein, 2021), would extend the distribution of this taxon to tropical America. We have not had the opportunity to evaluate this proposal, so retain use of the name Lejeunea anisophylla.
