There has been confusion over the use of Gaultheria pyroloides and Gaultheria miqueliana. The latter according to IPNI, was a nom. superfl. as Takeda included the syntype of G. pyroloides Miq. (from Japan) that was subsequently designated as the lectotype of G. pyroloides (cf., Vienna Code Art. 52 Note 2).
