Strigula oleistrata as a segregate of the endemic S. novae-zelandiae is probably endemic to New Zealand as well. Currently the species is only known from Kerikeri south to Hauraki Gulf, northern Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula within the northern North Island of New Zealand. This is within an area bounded by the natural distribution of its principle phorophyte taraire (Beilschmiedia tarairi).
