According to Crum & Anderson (1981, p. 1009), the epithet means “full of twigs or branches, perhaps making reference to stems crowded together like fagots of brushwood. (The botanical term sarmentosa is used to refer to runners of stolons, and in that meaning seems inappropriate to the moss at hand.)"
