The epithet purpurascens aptly means becoming purple. The disused epithet humboldtii honours the great Prussian explorer and geographer Alexander von Humboldt who, together with Aimé Bonpland, gathered the type of Hedwigia humboldtii at high elevation in the northern Andes.
