This taxon was recorded from New Zealand by Dixon, 1929 p. 360, on the basis of a collectio from Brabourne, near Murchison, H.H. Allan, CHR 265288. This specimen was determined as Sphagnum cristatum Hampe by A.T. Dobson (1974) and later confirmed by Allan Fife (2006)
