The epithet “macquariensis” refers to the geographic location of the type collection Macquarie Island, and presumably the belief that the species was endemic to that location.
Holotype: Australia, Macquarie Island, Gordon Cove, on coastal rocks, 31.x.1956, D.A. Brown M-56-Li-24 (FH!) (Figure 3).
