Although Greven (2000) listed many New Zealand names in synonymy with Grimmia pulvinata, he then statead "The Australian populations are comparable with the New Zealand and African ones, differing from the European plants by somewhat smaller capsules, shorter lid and longer basal leaf cells. After examination of a large number of specimens from various countries, I have referred these plants to G. pulvinata var. africana (Hedw.) Hook.f. & Wils." Similarly, he thus must have regarded the synonyms of New Zealand and Australian material that he listed as synonyms for B. pulvinata, to be the var. africana.
