Paenibacillus larvae was first detected in New Zealand in 1877, within 10 years, the disease had spread to all parts of New Zealand. Current policy requires all infected bee hives to be destroyed, the current incidence is thought to be about 0.3% of hives.

A polyphasic taxonomic study (Genersch et al. 2006) of the two subspecies of Paenibacillus larvae, ¤ Paenibacillus larvae subsp. larvae and ¤ Paenibacillus larvae subsp. pulvifaciens, supported the reclassification of both subspecies into one species, Paenibacillus larvae, without subspecies classification.
