Oxalis thompsoniae B.J.Conn & P.G.Richards

Prostrate or decumbent, creeping herb; taproot slender, 1.5-4.5 mm diameter, not woody or fibrous; roots also developing at some nodes of the primary branches, initially fibrous, often thickening; primary branches ('stems') elongate, to 45 cm long, glabrous or with occasional simple, antrorse hairs, or sometimes patent, septate hairs also present; secondary branches often present, with internodes elongated (as for primary branches) and/or reduced to form short erect shoots, sparsely to moderately hairy, with hairs mostly antrorse, or nearly glabrous; hairs as for primary branches. Leaves 3-foliolate, glabrous or sparsely hairy, often more densely hairy on abaxial surface of lamina, particularly on midrib and margin of each leaflet; hairs simple, appressed, 0.3-0.4 mm long; stipules conspicuous, membranous, becoming papery, adnate to petiole along length, 1-2 mm long, 0.5-1 mm wide distally, glabrous or sparsely hairy with simple and/or septate hairs, always with longer simple hairs on margin (hairs 0.4-0.8 mm long), with apex of stipules rounded; petiole (0.4-)1.5-5(-9) cm long, with simple appressed antrorse hairs, with or without patent septate hairs; leaflets very broadly obovate, 3.5-16 mm long, 5-20 mm wide (length to width ratio 0.7-1), bilobed (sinus 1-3.5 mm long). Inflorescences cymose, frequently reduced, 1-4(-6)-flowered, usually 3- or 5-flowered; at axis (peduncle) 2-5 mm long (small-leafed plants), 13-60 mm long (large-leafed plants), sparsely hairy (up to 30 hairs/mm²); hairs as for petiole; prophylls subulate, 1-1.5 mm long; anthopodium + a₂ axis (in 1-3-flowered infiorescences)(Figs 5 and 6) or anthopodium + a₃ axis (inflorescence >3-flowered)(Figs 7 and 8) 3-8 mm long (small-leafed plants), 2-16 mm long (large-leafed plants), lengthening in fruit, moderately hairy (30-60 hairs/mm²); hairs as for petiole. Sepals oblong, 2-2.5 mm long, 0.6-0.8 mm wide, 2.2-3.8 mm long in fruit, green, sometimes with maroon tinge towards margin, glabrous or with simple and septate hairs abaxially, with apical tuft of hairs (particularly noticeable adaxially); margin fimbriate, with hairs c. 0.2 mm long. Petals 4-5 mm long, yellow. Staminal tube or ring 0.2-0.4 mm long; stamens alternately long and short; long (antisepalous) filaments c. 2.2 mm long, with anthers c. 0.4 mm long; short (antipetalous) filaments c. 1.6 mm long, with anthers c. 0.2 mm long. Gynoecium narrowly ovoid, 2-2.5 mm long; ovary 1.3-1.4 mm long, c. 0.4 mm wide, with minute, multicelled (septate) hairs; styles 0.4-0.5 mm long, with dense covering of appressed, antrorse hairs; stigmas 0.15--0.2 mm long; surface papillate. Capsule narrowly oblong (in profile), longitudinally ribbed, 5.5-16 mm long, 1.9-3 mm wide (mean 10 × 2.6 mm) including persistent styles, tapering sharply to the apex; outer surface densely covered with short, simple retrorse hairs and many longer, patent, terete, septate hairs (flattened and crisped when dry). Seeds compressed-obovoid, very flanened, 1.3-1.8 mm long, 0.9-1.2 mm wide (mean 1.5 × 1 mm), with 2-5 indistinct transverse ridges on both surfaces, dark purple-brown when ripe. (Fig. 9.)
Herba repens, prostrata vel decumbens; radix palaris gracilis, diametro 1.5-4.5 mm; omnes partes pilis plerumque simplicibus antrorsis vel etiam pilis saepe septatis patentibus vel ramis interdum glabris. Stipulae conspicuae, quaeque apice rotundo. Petiolus (0.4-)1.5-5(-9) cm longus; foliola latissime obovata, 3.5-16 mm longa, 5-20 mm lata, quaeque apice bilobato. Inflorescentiae plerumque 3- veI 5-floribus. Sepala oblonga, 2-2.5 mm longa. Petala 4-5 mm longa. Filamenta staminum vel c. 2.2 mm longa antheris c. 0.4 mm longis vel c. 1.6 mm longa antheris c. 0.2 mm longis. Gynoecium anguste ovoideum, 2-2.5 mm longum; ovarium pilis minutis septatis.Capsula in circumferentia anguste oblonga, 5.5-16 mm longa, pilis septatis patentibus, apice abrupte contracto. Semina compressa obovoidea, 1.3-1.8 mm longa, 0.9-1.2 mm lata; testa 2-5-porcata, cristis indistinctis.
