The name was first published in Dict. Prat. Hort. 4: 495 (1896-1897) as 'hybride d'une espèce de Rhododendron et d'Azalea indica'; but is currently unplaced (Plants of the World Online). However, it is still a "blocking name' for Rhododendron williamsii Merr. ex H.F.Copel. (1929)
