Dixon (1929) stated that he relied on Warnstorf 1911 for his treatment of Sphagnum in New Zealand. He cited S. subbicolor Hampe as "probably one more the more common species". In her census of New South Wales Mosses, Telopea 2 (1984), Ramsay has S. biccolor Hampe in synonymy with S. cristatum Hampe.
