Although Fife did not categorically state S. subnitens is introduced, he did state: "Sphagnum subnitenswas first reported from New Zealand by Dobson (1975) on the basis of material from four Westland localities. [...] Although the [doubtful] occurrence of this species in southern South America [...] suggests that its presence in New Zealand is not phytogeographically unlikely, it seems improbably that such a characteristic species would remain uncollected here for such a long period.
