Etymology
The species epithet honours Thomas Kirk (1828–1898), an influential N.Z. botanist, forester, and author of Forest Flora of New Zealand (1889).
editorial
The protologue gives Mitten as the authority for the basionym, but Beckett also states that the taxon was "named by Mr. Mitten". Beckett does not say, as he does in other papers where appropriate, that the specimen was described by Mr. Mitten. It therefore appears that Beckett wrote the description and should be credited with authorship of this name.
