Allan Fife, in draft text for Echinodium treatment for Flora of New Zealand Mosses, regarded Echinodium umbrosum var. glaucoviride as a synonym of Echinodium umbrosum. This concept has been retained in the PND while the species name has been placed in Echinodiopsis following Olsson et. al. (2011).
