The issues around the legitimate publication of the epithet "merionella" and its variants is beyond the scope of the names project currently being undertaken. Possibly either Gladiolus merionellus Thunberg, or Antholyza merionella L. should be regarded as the basionym. Baker (1877) clearly intended all were homotypic synonyms and cited as synonyms both "Antholyza Merionella L.inn. Syst. Veg. xiv, 87, non Bot. Mag. t. 441 [and] Gladiolus Merionellus, Thunb. Diss. No. 11".
