Descriptions
Cordierites frondosa (Kobayasi) Korf
Specimen examined: on ground, Auckland, Waitemata City, Waitakere Ranges, at junction of Old Coach Road and Fairy Falls Track (from the same site as type collection: GJS), G.J. Samuels & A.Y. Rossman, 4. VI. 1983, NY (ex PDD 46300, filed under Cordierites acanthophora).
A specimen in NY (ex PDD 46300) identified by Dr Samuels (one of the original authors) has been examined. This is a very special and interesting fungus, its apothecia scattered on a cylindrical stalk bearing thorn-like pycnidia. Samuels and Kohn (1987) have given a very detailed description and illustration. It is obviously a fungus in the Encloelioideae but neither in Ionomidotis nor in Cordierites. The loosely interconnected, subglobose excipular cells, and J+ ascus iodine reaction remind me of the genus Encoelia. The other features, especially the large, fusoid ornamented ascospores, and the thorn-like pycnidia seated on a stalk, do not fit the genus Encoelia. I have no position for it. It might represent a new genus.
