Provided that the identification is correct, this species must be considered as having been introduced into New Zealand with exotic trees such as spruce or fir.

The following description covers the New Zealand collections. Pileus 5-6 cm. diam., grey-fawn, viscid, darker at centre, somewhat mealy patches of volva stuck on surface. Gills free, creamy-white, rather crowded. Stipe 1-2 x 7-8 cm., white or grey tinted, velvety above, and silky floccose below the ring which is characteristically full and striate. Volva concrescent to swollen base of stipe. Spores amyloid, subglobose, 7-9um diam., or ovoid 8-9 x 6um.

Specimens of these collections differ only slightly from many published descriptions and illustrations of this well known toadstool. According to Lange this species is very variable with differing habitat and weather.
