As far as is known, Strigula novae-zelandiae is endemic to the northern North Island of New Zealand. Within that range the species has been recorded from Kaitaia south to the northern Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula and northern portion of East Cape. This is within an area bounded by the natural distribution of the principle phorophyte for the species taraire (Beilschmiedia tarairi).
