Leptolejuenea australis is provisionally accepted for New Zealand. Shu et al (2021), on the basis of lmolecular work, regarded L. australis as an Australasian endemic. The previously accepted name for the Leptolejeunea in New Zealand was L. elliptica subsp. subacuta. Shu et al divided L. elliptica into four taxa, with L. elliptica s.s. in the Neotropics, L. subacuta and another species in Asia, and L. australis in Australasia.
